Asian Performing Arts Markets Travel Fund 2016/17

New Zealand performing arts producers and companies are supported to attend performing arts markets in Asia with the aim of exploring presentation opportunities and building networks.

1. Check your eligibility

Who can apply

To apply for Creative New Zealand funding, you:

  • must be a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or organisation (overseas arts organisations or overseas-based New Zealand artists may be funded only if the project directly benefits New Zealand arts)
  • cannot be a Creative New Zealand staff member or a member of the Arts Council.

Benefits and track record

To be eligible for Creative New Zealand funding:

  • Your project or activities must directly benefit New Zealand arts, artists or practitioners.
  • You must have a track record of experience and success — this means you must have:
    • recognition from peers or experts
    • achieved a degree of critical or sales success
    • specialised training or practical experience.

Who can't apply

We are not able to consider proposals from:

  • organisations funded by a government agency, tertiary institution or local authority unless the proposed activity goes beyond the core or contracted activity for which they receive funding.

Late reports and breaches of agreements

We cannot fund you if you, your organisation, or key members of your team:

  • are more than 16 weeks overdue with a report for a previous grant or investment
  • are in breach of the conditions of a current funding agreement
  • were in 'default' of a funding agreement and sent in a late report in the six months prior to the closing date for a new application.

Eligibility for the Asian Performing Arts Markets Travel Fund 2015/16

Performing arts producers and companies must meet the following criteria.

  • The performing arts markets or must be in one of the following: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. These territories are a priority for our Focus on Asia strategy.
  • A company must have previous experience touring or presenting work internationally.
  • A company must have tour-ready work in its repertoire.
  • A company must have a clear rationale for entering the Asian market and be ready and able to work with artists from Asia.
  • A producer or representative of a New Zealand performing arts company must be able to attend the dates of the market(s)/meeting(s).
  • Showcase presentations must be confirmed with a letter of invitation.

2. See what's funded


This fund offers support to New Zealand producers and companies to 

  • attend strategic performing arts markets and/or present in a market showcase
  • develop professional and/or creative networks and relationships
  • identify and develop opportunities to present work off-shore and build markets
  • identify and develop opportunities for artistic collaborations, partnerships and exchanges
  • increase awareness of artistic and cultural practice.

Examples of key markets in the specified territories include:

  • PAMS - Seoul, South Korea (4-8 October 2016)
  • ChinaSPAF – Shanghai, China (11-16 October 2016)
  • TPAM - Yokohama, Japan (11-19 February 2017)

Costs covered

Up to $3,000 per delegate or up to $10,000 per company is available to attend and showcase work at a market.

Creative New Zealand will contribute to:

  • international travel
  • accommodation
  • admission fees for delegates
  • the costs of presenting a showcase.

It is expected that between three to six producers or companies will be supported.

How to apply

  1. Start your application online. You may need to register first.
  2. Collate support material, eg applicant bio information. 
  3. Prepare a budget.
  4. Submit your application online by 5pm on the closing date.


4. Assessing applications

Assessment process

  1. Relevant Creative New Zealand staff assess applications and make recommendations.
  2. The senior manager of the international team reviews and approves recommendations.

5. Notification of results

Applicants will be notified of a decision on 8 August 2016.

6. On completion

Grant recipients must provide a satisfactory written project completion report within 12 weeks of the project completion date.
