A three-month artist residency in Apia, Samoa is open to all established artists of Pacific Island heritage resident in New Zealand.

  • The residency will run from August to October 2012.
  • The artist-in-residence programme is administered by Creative New Zealand, with support on the ground from the National University of Samoa and an appointed local administrator.
  • Previous recipients of the Samoan Artist in Residence have been: Nathaniel Lees, Jim Vivieaere, Fiona Collins and Tiffany Singh.
  • This year (2012) marks the 50th anniversary of Samoan Independence and the Treaty of Friendship between New Zealand and Samoa.  To acknowledge these events, Creative New Zealand is particularly interested in projects that have a theme which aligns with the anniversary celebrations and New Zealand-Samoa relationships.

The applicant will be required to:

  • conduct an agreed amount of workshops or fono with students undergoing teacher training courses
  • or undertake mentoring with local emerging or established artists
  • hold a public presentation towards the end of the residency as a public outcome
  • complete a full written report within two months of completing the residency.

Selection Process

A committee comprising representatives of the Pacific Arts Committee and external peer assessors will assess applications. The recipient will be announced by 30 June 2012.
