Creative New Zealand is this country's leading arts development and funding organisation. We feel there is a need to focus more clearly on how we can best "develop" the arts of this country.
One of the ways we are addressing this is through a team of people who will work across the organisation and the arts, taking a more strategic approach to the development of the New Zealand arts sector. We also wanted to become a more cohesive organisation and so the new Arts Development team is integrating more effectively staff in our three sites in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch under one Arts Development national manager.
The new team was put in place in November 2006. For the July 2008 funding round the processes will remain the same. However, there will be some changes from February 2009.
Review of Project Funding and Special Opportunities for Artists
The new Arts Development team is divided into a programmes team and a strategy team. The programmes team has members in the three offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. They work directly with artists and arts organisations that Creative New Zealand funds, and manage and deliver Creative New Zealand's funding programmes, initiatives and special opportunities for artists. So, for example monitoring and advising on funding applications across artforms, and managing the residencies and fellowships we administer, is handled by the people in the programmes team.
The strategy team is based in our Wellington office. They work to identify strategic issues and opportunities across the arts sector. The strategy team works across Creative New Zealand as an organisation and its work involves both consultation with, and benefits for, the whole arts sector. In 2007, the strategy team has been leading a review of our project funding system, which is one of the main ways Creative New Zealand funds individuals and groups across all artforms.
Artform expertise has been retained with this change from Arts Services to Arts Development and is valued by Creative New Zealand. The idea behind these changes is to deliver even better results for New Zealand artists and arts organisations and for New Zealanders as a whole.
