He Herenga Kura, He Herenga Tāngata ki Hawaiki Uniting treasure and people to Hawaiki
The Festival of Pacific Arts (FestPAC) is the premiere indigenous arts and culture event in Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. The festival brings together over 2,000 artists and practitioners representing 27 Pacific Island countries and territories.
The 13th FestPAC is from 6-16 June 2024 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The theme is based on voyaging: "Ho’oulu Lāhui – Regenerating Oceania", which promises to restore the spirit of Pacific culture with artists across the Pacific nations.
Aotearoa New Zealand is sending an 85-member delegation, maintaining its tradition of continuous attendance at the event since the first in Fiji in 1972.
Aotearoa’s participation in FestPAC is Māori-led, with a minor contingent of Aotearoa-based Pacific artists making up the delegation.
Taku Hoe - Our Vision
“Taku Hoe” is the vision of the New Zealand Aotearoa delegation. Within the logo, the symbols of three hoe draw each delegate back to the ocean via the waka hourua, Horouta.
As kaihoe, kaiurungi (navigators), and kaitiaki, the individual responsibility is enhanced by the hoe imagery to paddle in unison towards a common goal. The regeneration of Oceania and the promise of the sweetness of the kūmara is a metaphor for shared indigenous knowledge within the FestPAC context.
