Waiata Anthems Debuts at #1
2 Oct 2019
Creative NZ would like to congratulate Waiata Anthems on its debut at No. 1 in the NZ music charts.
11 of New Zealand’s best loved artists performed their hit songs in Te Reo Māori, curated by Hinewehi Mohi and translated by renowned language exponent, Sir Tīmoti Kāretu.
Creative New Zealand provided funding support for the project inline with a committment to te reo Māori, in recognition of the Year of the Indigenous Language and in support of the original album artwork by Kauri Hawkins. Hawkins’ (Ngāti Pāhauwera, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāti Porou, Rongowhakaata) artwork represents the ‘manu’ or songbird and how music can be used to tell stories and to share Te Reo Māori. The manu figure can be seen as a face and has references to te reo Māori the ‘native tongue’.
Recorded over 10 weeks in 2019 and released to Māori Language week, Mohi worked directly with artists such as Bic Runga, Six60 and Tami Neilson in the studio to guide their intonation and understanding of the new Māori lyrics.
“These tracks are well known to people, so they can connect the English words they know to the Māori translation and feel like they’re accessing Te Reo Māori through something familiar” said Mohi.
