The Ngā Toi ā Rohe, Arts in the Region Fund is set to open in March 2020, focusing on incentivising arts programming and the development of new work in partnership with communities outside the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Organisations outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch will be eligible to apply for up to $150,000 for the development or presentation of new work within their region.
The fund aims to:
- increase investment in the arts by local and regional partners
- develop high-quality arts by and within local and regional communities
- increase engagement (attendance and/or participation) in high-quality arts experiences by local and regional communities outside the main centres.
Senior Manager Arts Development Services Cath Cardiff says, “This will allow arts organisations and groups outside of the main centres to work together with their local authorities or other funding partners on projects that are from and for their region, developing high quality arts by, for and with their communities.”
“Through these collaborations, the arts will encourage communities to come together, engage with each other and share positive creative experiences. It will also enable local artists to develop and present their work within their own contexts for the benefit of their communities,” she says.
Applications for projects must:
- focus on collaborative, high-quality new work or high-quality arts experiences by, with and for the local community
- provide evidence of new investment in the project by local stakeholders (this can be in-kind investment in the first year of the Fund)
- include authentic engagement with the community as part of the project e.g. consultation, research, delivery.
The fund is open to arts organisations, iwi, hapū, local or regional authorities, other presenters (e.g. marae, local venues, galleries, and libraries), community and private trusts, or regional arts development agencies.
Creative New Zealand’s Tōtara and Kahikatea investment clients (outside of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) can also apply and be involved in a project providing that the project is not business as usual and/or not included in their annual programme, as agreed and supported by Creative New Zealand.
Applicants can only submit one application per round with one round per year for three years commencing in 2020. Applications must be for different projects and must be for new activity.
A total of $550,000 is available each year.

- Notify results: 19 June 2020
