Hema Temara

He aituā!

We are saddened at the passing of Ngāi Tūhoe matriarch, Hemanawa (Hema) Temara.

Kui Hema was a staunch advocate for tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori.

A long-serving tikanga and marae co-ordinator at Te Papa Tongarewa, she led Māori projects and was a kaitiaki of Māori taonga and heritage.

She was also a main contributor to Tūhoe ki Pōneke, a group that was established to help iwi members living in Wellington maintain their culture and identity.

We send our aroha to the Temara whānau and loved ones, to Ngāi Tūhoe, to her Tū Te Maungaroa whānau, and to her work whānau at Te Papa.

Her loss will be felt widely. Rest in peace e kui.
