The annual Creative New Zealand Samoa Artist in Residence opportunity will now provide the successful artist NZD $25,000 towards an artist stipend, travel and associated costs.

The funding increase focuses on the Moana pou of the Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023, nurturing meaningful connections across Oceania to ensure that Pacific arts are further enriched.

In partnership with the National University of Samoa, with support from the New Zealand High Commission in Apia, the three-month residency will be based in Apia from August and October 2020.

The residency is open to mid-career or established Aotearoa-based artists of Pasifika heritage to work on an arts project and to develop their skills and practice.

Arts Council member Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban says that the opportunity to grow the connection between artists across the Pacific is important to the well-being of Pacific arts in Aotearoa.

“The Pacific Arts Strategy provides funding to support Pasifika artists by offering Residencies and time to develop their work and creativity and to exchange cultural knowledge and skills. This investment is outcomes focussed and is aligned with the Pacific Arts Strategy. This opportunity will reignite our connection as peoples of the Pacific family and Oceania,” she says.

Applicants must be a New Zealand artist of Pacific Island heritage, a resident in Aotearoa and have a strong track record in their art form. Find more information on our website
