Creative New Zealand

Our work | Regional development and communities

The arts of New Zealand are flourishing in our culturally diverse communities - in rural communities, towns and cities, and in a range of ways and places. Creative New Zealand is committed to supporting opportunities for New Zealanders to engage in the arts - wherever they live and whatever their circumstances.

  • Since 2000, the Regional Strengths Maurangi Toi programme, jointly funded by Creative New Zealand and the Ministry for Social Development, has supported arts and cultural projects led by regional partnerships.
  • Art trails, exhibitions, feasibility studies, festivals, websites and professional development programmes are among the activities being undertaken by thirteen regional partnerships with funding through Regional Strengths Maurangi Toi.
  • Waitakere City Council's commitment to ensuring vibrant public spaces and an arts-rich city was recognised when it won the Premier Creative Places Award 2007, presented by Creative New Zealand at the Local Government New Zealand Conference in Dunedin from 15 to 17 July 2007.
  • The Creative Communities Scheme is a partnership between Creative New Zealand and local authorities, working with communities throughout New Zealand.
  • Artists from across the top of the South Island will be enticing gallery owners to form a relationship with them at the inaugural Top of the South Arts Expo, to be held in Nelson on 29 and 30 May.
  • An exhibition showcasing the work of West Coast artists ran at the Left Bank Art Gallery in Greymouth and then the Centre of Contemporary Art in Christchurch in March this year with funding through Regional Strengths Maurangi Toi and the West Coast Development Trust.
