Awards celebrate artists

Creative New Zealand supports several awards to celebrate artists and their achievements. These include Ngā Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi - Te Waka Toi Awards, the Arts Pasifika Awards, the Prime Minister's Awards for Literary Achievement, the Montana New Zealand Book Awards and the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

Ngā Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi - Te Waka Toi Awards
Te Waka Toi presents four annual awards recognising leadership, outstanding contribution to Māori arts and excellence in Māori arts. Arts Pasifika Awards
The Pacific Arts Committee presents the annual Arts Pasifika Awards to recognise senior artists, emerging artists, opera singers, the heritage arts, and innovation and excellence in a particular artform. Read about the recipients of the 2006 Arts Pasifika Awards.

Prime Minister's Awards for Literary Achievement
Creative New Zealand administers the annual Prime Minister's Awards for Literary Achievement, which recognise outstanding New Zealand writers in the genres of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Recipients are Janet Frame 2003, Maurice Gee 2004, Margaret Mahy 2005, Patricia Grace 2006, Fiona Farrell 2007 (fiction); Hone Tuwhare 2003, Kevin Ireland 2004, Alistair Te Ariki Campbell 2005, Vincent O'Sullivan 2006, Bill Manhire 2007 (poetry); and Michael King 2003, Anne Salmond 2004, Philip Temple 2005, Judith Binney 2006, Dick Scott 2007 (non-fiction). The Awards were established in 2003 as the result of additional funding to the literary sector, announced by the Government in May 2002.

Readers, writers, groups and organisations are invited to nominate outstanding New Zealand writers in the three genres of poetry, fiction and non-fiction for the Prime Minister's Awards for Literary Achievement 2008.

Alternatively you can email nominations to Creative New Zealand pmawards@creativenz.govt.nz including a brief statement about why you have nominated the writer/s.  Nominations close at 5pm on Friday 13 June 2008.

Montana New Zealand Book Awards

New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults

The New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, supported by Creative New Zealand through Booksellers New Zealand and sponsored by New Zealand Post, celebrates excellence in children's literature, illustration and publishing.
