New Zealand curators will be immersed in China and Japan’s contemporary arts scenes on a tour run by the Asia New Zealand Foundation in partnership with Creative New Zealand.

The 2015 Curator Tour will see up to three New Zealand curators travel to Asia in August 2015 and visit leading museums, galleries, and artist spaces. The curators will also visit the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, an innovative contemporary art festival held in rural Niigata prefecture, Japan.

Applications close on Monday 13 April.

Asia New Zealand Foundation director, culture Jennifer King says the previous tours have given curators more confidence about working with Asian artists and institutions. “Previous tours have led to exciting exhibitions of works by Asian artists in New Zealand, and also helped raise the profile of New Zealand artists.

“We are enormously grateful to Creative New Zealand for partnering with us on this initiative.”

The Curator Tour is one part of the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s arts programme, which also includes artist-in-residence exchanges and grants to support artists to undertake projects in Asia.

The Foundation is also calling for applications from New Zealand dance practitioners to participate in its new Performing Arts Tour to Singapore and Malaysia, held in August and September. The tour will enable up to three emerging to mid-career contemporary dance professionals to attend the Singapore International Arts Festival – one of Asia’s foremost contemporary performing arts festivals – and Malaysia’s George Town Festival.

Ms King says the tour will encourage dancers to build their professional networks and explore possible future collaborations in Asia. Applications close on Monday 16 March.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation dedicated to building New Zealand’s links with Asia through a range of programmes, including business, culture, education, media, research and a Leadership Network.
