For 2015 and 2016 a special fund has been created for Sistema-based programmes, which use orchestral music projects to make a difference in the lives of children and their families.

Under this pilot initiative, an emerging or planned Sistema-based programme can apply for a two-year grant to assist with operational costs.  To be eligible it must be a member of the Te Rōpu El Sistema (TRES) network.*

The El Sistema movement is a model widely adopted in other countries. Īt uses orchestral music-making as a context for achieving positive personal and social outcomes for children, their families and communities.

In 2011, Sistema Aotearoa began as a partnership between the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, with Creative New Zealand as a primary funder since 2013.

Sistema  Aotearoa has established and consolidated a programme which provides a distinctive social and musical development experience for 250 children and their whānau in the South Auckland community of Otara.

Several other New Zealand communities have begun planning or operating Sistema-base programmes encouraged by interest in this approach in New Zealand and the early successes of Sistema  Aotearoa in Otara.

This pilot funding opportunity is intended to consolidate these first steps, supporting the Sistema approach in more communities in Aotearoa.

Each funded organisation will be offered free professional advice and support by Sistema Aotearoa. Taking up this offer is optional, but encouraged. The support may include tutor training and development courses and workshops; curriculum development support; assistance with resources; advice on assessment methods and other good practice; and other services according to demand and available expertise.
