2011 Pikihuia Awards for Māori writers

Huia Publishers and the Māori Literature Trust are excited to announce the return of the Pikihuia Awards for Māori Writers, starting 1 January 2011. We encourage Māori writers of novels, short stories and film scripts to start thinking about story ideas or tidy-up existing work to send in the new year.

Supporting diversity in writing and supporting innovation, these awards recognise outstanding work by Māori writers.

Categories for 2011 include:

  • Best short story written in Māori
  • Best short story written in English
  • Best novel extract written in English
  • Best short film script written in English
  • Secondary School Award Category Prizes

The winner of each category, except the Secondary School Award, will receive a cash prize of $2000.

Two highly commended finalists in each category, except the Secondary School Award, will receive a cash prize of $500 each.

Selected winners and finalists will also be published in Huia Short Stories 9 - the contemporary fiction series published by Huia Publishers.

Secondary School Award Category: the winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and the winner's school will receive $250 worth of HUIA books. Two highly commended finalists will receive a cash prize of $250 each with their schools receiving $100 worth of HUIA books.

Send your story along with a completed entry form before the closing time of 5pm, 15 April 2011.

Entry forms can be completed and sent in together with your story via an on-line entry form or a pdf which can be emailed, posted or couriered to Huia Publishers.

PDF of Entry Form - PDF forms can be printed off and completed then posted or couriered together with 2 hard-copies of your story to Huia Publishers.
