Knighthoods for women in the arts

Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, who was last year’s recipient of Te Tohutiketike, Te Waka Toi, was made a Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this year. Also honoured with a knighthood was Dame Jenny Gibbs, an ardent supporter of the arts and joint head of the patrons for the New Zealand at Venice 2009 campaign. The honours were announced just before the Venice Biennale opened, a fitting cause for a double celebration.
