We believe international success is a priority for both artistic and economic sustainability. Creative New Zealand's international strategy 2009 - 2013 implements our strategic priority: New Zealand arts gain international success.

The international strategy spans all art forms. It was developed in 2008 and involved wide consultation with the New Zealand arts sector, other government agencies and our international networks. It provides a focus for Creative New Zealand’s international activities and ensures our funding and resources are directed towards the best results.

domestic distribution of the arts

Creative New Zealand recognises there can be strong connections between international and domestic distribution of the arts. To learn about the funding opportunities for national touring go to our page on the distribution strategy: Distribution of the arts across New Zealand.

What the international strategy means for you

The international strategy has been developed to help New Zealand artists and arts organisations take their work to an international audience. For artists, arts practitioners and arts organisations, the strategy can help you:

  • with funding to take your work overseas
  • build your capability so that you can access international markets
  • interact with international directors, publishers, producers, festival directors, major presenters and visual arts curators who come to New Zealand as part of Te Manu Ka Tau, Creative New Zealand's programme of international visits aimed at encouraging the showing of New Zealand work overseas.

Who is the International Strategy for?

However, before you go further, ask yourself a number of questions:

  • Am I a professional artist?
  • Do I have a track record in my artform?
  • Has my work been toured / exhibited / published in New Zealand?
  • Am I ready to engage internationally?

If your answer is yes to all these questions, then you are eligible for the programmes and initiatives of Creative New Zealand's international strategy. Please continue reading this page to see what specific initiatives may be relevant to you. Details of each initiative are provided in the links which take you to subpages of this section of the website.

If you answered no to any of the questions, you may still be eligible for other Creative New Zealand initiatives. Please visit our main Funding page to find out more.

I am eligible - what exactly does the International Strategy provide?

There are six main ways for you to access Creative New Zealand's programmes and funding to take you international or help in developing your potential:

  1. You can attend an arts trade fair. Creative New Zealand sends a delegation of artists/industry professionals to various international arts trade fairs. A list of these and details on how you can apply can be found on the page Applying for international arts trade fairs.
  2. You can participate in Te Manu Ka Tau, a Creative New Zealand programme where we invite international directors, publishers, producers, festival directors, major presenters and visual arts curators to New Zealand. You will be able to take part in workshops, Q&A sessions and also pitch your shows to these international guests. Find out more about these on the page Market development.
  3. You can apply to take part in development and capability building programmes that are specifically designed to help you become international-ready. To read more about how to get on one of these programmes, click to read the page Developing potential.
  4. You can apply for funding to take your work international. Creative New Zealand's Contestable Funding process accepts applications from artists who wish to take their work to international audiences. Read more about Contestable Funding on the Funding section of our website.
  5. You can apply for funding for a project if you have received an international invitation directly through participating in one of the international arts trade fairs or market development opportunities outlined above in 1,2 and 3. To find out more about the International Touring Fund, contact the international team.
  6. You can apply to take part in an international residency. These are fantastic opportunities for artists to increase their international profile and networks. To find out more, read our page Special opportunities for artists.
