The closing date for applications for 2010 is friday 4 june.

The eligibility and guidelines for 2010 have changed. Please read the information below and in the Application Guidelines to ensure your application is eligible.

Independent Filmmakers Fund 2010

The Independent Filmmakers Fund was established as a partnership fund between Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission in 2009, replacing the former Screen Innovation Production Fund.

The New Zealand Film Commission recently announced its disinvestment from the Independent Filmmakers Fund. Creative New Zealand will however continue to offer the Fund, independent of the New Zealand Film Commission, in 2010. The closing date is Friday 4 June 2010.

Purpose of the Fund

The purpose of the fund is to invest in exceptional, innovative, high quality, non commercial projects by experienced film and moving-image makers striving to engage audiences throughout New Zealand and beyond.

The list of eligible genre of the fund has been tailored for the 2010 round to reflect the change in the partnership fund. Please note that the fund no longer accepts narrative short film or narrative feature film proposals.

In 2010, this fund will award grants for production and/or post-production proposals in two categories in the following film making genre:

  • animation
  • experimental documentary film
  • experimental film *
  • dance film
  • moving image art projects **

*Experimental film includes a range of filmmaking styles often characterised by the absence of a linear narrative. For example, projects that take an impressionistic or poetic approach to film construction, or projects that use a variety of abstracting techniques including the use or absence of sound.

**Moving-image arts projects can include visual arts projects that draw on filmmaking practice. This may include larger-scale fine-art video projects and experimental multi-disciplinary projects intended for presentation or exhibition within a visual arts context.

If your moving-image work is intended as a small component of a gallery-based installation, you may be eligible to apply for some costs relating to your project through Creative New Zealand Contestable Funding. Please discuss your proposal with a Creative New Zealand staff member before you send in an application.

Funding is not available for music videos, educational videos, commercial and/or made-for-television programmes, script development or projects to be assessed as part of the course work for tertiary study.
