New Zealand’s presence at the Venice Biennale

The 2009 event will mark the fourth time that Creative New Zealand has hosted a New Zealand presence at the six month long Venice Biennale. It is the cornerstone of New Zealand’s presentation of our visual arts internationally.

New Zealand's participation in the Biennale is organised by Creative New Zealand's International team.

See what's happening now at the NZ at Venice website.

Festival of Pacific Arts

New Zealand has participated in every Festival of Pacific Arts since its inception in 1972. Creative New Zealand has supported an Aotearoa New Zealand delegation at the Festival of Pacific Arts, held every four years, since 1994. The 10th Festival of Pacific Arts was held in Pago Pago, American Samoa, in July 2008.

New Zealand's participation in the Festival is organised by Creative New Zealand's Maori Arts Services team.

Funding for touring and events

There are three main ways your international touring projects can be funded by Creative New Zealand. They are through Contestable Funding, through Recurrently Funded Organisations (RFOs) or through the International Touring Fund. Contestable Funding, Recurrent Funding and the International Touring Fund can support New Zealand works to be toured internationally in response to an invitation from an overseas presenter.

Contestable funding

Creative New Zealand's Contestable Funding can assist with international touring travel and freight expenses. There needs to be evidence of demand for the work to be toured internationally and that artists and practitioner fees and accommodation costs will be met by the local presenter.

Recurrently Funded Organisations (RFOs)

Recurrently funded arts organisations (RFOs) can include international touring/events as part of their recurrent funding provided this is included in the RFO’s strategic plan and has been agreed with Creative New Zealand. A sample of recent tours shows the following destinations in order of expenditure involved: North America, Australia, United Kingdom, Europe, South America. Recent examples include Black Grace performing in North America and Noumea and the NZSQ’s tour in Europe.

International Touring Fund

The international touring fund is specifically to support touring, international engagements and invitations that are a direct result of Creative New Zealand initiatives to develop an international market. Creative New Zealand's international programme runs initiatives around particular arts trade fairs, book and visual arts fairs and music expos. It also runs Market development initiatives as outlined on this page. To view a list of the arts trade fairs that Creative New Zealand currently supports attendance at see the page Applying for international arts trade fairs

If you have received an invitation to show your work abroad directly through your attendance at an international arts trade fair or an international market development initiative that you attended as part of Creative New Zealand's delegation, you can apply to receive funding for that international project directly from Creative New Zealand's International Touring Fund. Contact international@creativenz.govt.nz if this applies to you.

Please note: grants from the international touring fund can only be used for travel and freight costs and it is expected that the overseas presenter will provide artist fees, grount transport and accommodation.
