Cost: a flat rate of $30 includes both days as well as lunch and morning and afternoon teas. A limited number of travel subsidies are available to assist participants from outside the Auckland region to attend.

ARTSpeak PASIFIKA 2010

Creative New Zealand in association with Pasifika Festival presents ARTSpeak Pasifika – a two-day national fono for the Pacific arts industry.
 

Open to Pacific artists working in visual arts, performing arts, film and television, music, literature and heritage arts, the fono is an opportunity to share ideas and participate in panel discussions designed to provide inspiration and practical advice on making a successful career in the arts.

DAY ONE - Friday 25 June, 9am-5pm

8am Registration: tea/coffee provided

9.30am Keynote Speaker, Albert Wendt: Where have we come from and where are we going

10am Panel One: International: developing and targeting your work for international markets. Creative New Zealand’s International Manager Carla van Zon will present the agency’s international strategy. Panel includes Makerita Urale (chair), Dr Cathie Koa Dunsford, Neil Ieremia, Michel Tuffery

11am Panel Two: Staying on top of the Game: making a living as a full-time artist. Panel includes Vela Manusaute (chair), Fatu Feu’u, Tusiata Avia, Miria George

12:45pm - 2:45pm Six one-hour artform workshops: to identify opportunities that arise when pursuing a career in the arts and how these might be exploited. Each workshop will have one facilitator and three panellists.

: Creative New Zealand Senior Programme Adviser Anton Carter will outline how to apply for funding from the agency including tips, the standard of applications and closing dates.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

albert wendt photo by brad gotaAlbert Wendt: Born in Apia, Samoa, Albert Wendt has published a huge range of fiction and poetry, as well as theoretical writing. He has won many literary awards and honours. His latest novel The Adventures of Vela, which was published in 2009, won the Commonwealth Book Prize for the South East Asia and Pacific Region. His publications often feature his own drawings, and in 2008 an exhibition of his paintings opened in Auckland. He has edited a number of important anthologies and continues to play a major role in fostering and promoting Pacific literature. Albert was Professor of New Zealand and Pacific literature at the University of Auckland from 1988 to 2006, and held the Citizens’ Chair at the University of Hawaii from 2004 to 2008. He is now Emeritus Professor at the University of Auckland, and is writing and painting full time.
