Wild Creations

These residencies are a partnership between the Department of Conservation and Creative New Zealand. The six-week residencies are open to practising artists in any artform or cultural tradition, and are chosen from one of more than 20 significant conservation sites throughout New Zealand.

Minimise Craft/Object Art

Creative New Zealand Craft/Object Art Fellowship

In 2004 Creative New Zealand established the Craft/Object Art Fellowship. The Fellowship is open to mid-career and senior New Zealand practitioners, curators and writers - ranging from jewellers, weavers and ceramicists through to furniture-makers and designers. The fellowship is worth $65,000.

Minimise Dance

Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship

This fellowship, awarded to those who have already produced a significant body of work, supports choreographers to develop new practices, undertake specific research, or deepen their skill or knowledge base. The fellowship is worth $65,000.

The recipient will be required to complete a project involving creative work and/or professional development within a 12 month period.

Tup Lang Choreographic Award

Interest from a bequest, made in 1999 by Mrs Lang's estate, contributes each year to this award, which is for the encouragement and promotion of choreography in New Zealand contemporary dance.


Choreographers or contemporary dance groups applying to the 3 September 2010 Arts Grants round are automatically considered for the award. Priority will be given to proposals involving the work of emerging choreographers.

Minimise Literature

Louis Johnson Writers’ Bursary

Interest from a monetary gift, made in 1989 by Louis Johnson’s estate, contributes to this annual bursary. Published writers at an early stage of their career who apply for an Arts Grant in the 5 March 2010 round are automatically considered for the bursary. No separate application is required.

The Todd Writers’ Bursary

This bursary is co-funded by Creative New Zealand and The Todd Corporation Ltd, each contributing a half-share, allowing a promising writer to work full-time for six months on an approved project. Published writers at an early stage of their career who apply for an Arts Grant in the 3 September 2010 round are automatically considered for the bursary. No separate application is required.

International Writing Program, University of Iowa, U.S.A

Nationally recognised writers who have previously published at lease one volume of work, are invited to apply for this three-month residency. The residency runs from approximately August to November and provides return travel to Iowa, assistance with living accommodation and accommodation on the University of Iowa campus.

Creative New Zealand Michael King Writers’ Fellowship

This $100,000 fellowship is available to senior authors with a significant publication record whose major project will take two years or more to complete.

The New Zealand Post Mansfield Prize

This award of $100,000 is administered by Creative New Zealand on behalf of the Winn-Manson Menton Trust. It enables experienced writers to spend up to six months in Menton, France with access to a rental apartment and use of the writing room in the Villa Isola Bella.

Berlin Writers’ Residency 2009/2010

This residency is available for an experienced writer to work on an approved project for a period of approximately nine months. It provides NZ$3000 for travel to Berlin, paid rental accommodation, a stipend of NZ$3000 per month and an incidental travel allowance.


Applications for 2009/2010 are now closed. The residency will be offered again for 2011/2012.

Prime Minister’s Awards for Literary Achievement

Worth $60,000 each, the annual Prime Minister's Awards for Literary Achievement recognise writers who have made a significant contribution to New Zealand literature. The awards are administered by Creative New Zealand.

Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writers’ Residency at the University of Hawai’i

This residency is a partnership between Fulbright New Zealand and Creative New Zealand. It provides an opportunity for a New Zealand writer (in any genre) to work on a project exploring Pacific identity, culture or history. The three month residency at the Centre for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawaii includes return airfares, accommodation costs and an artist stipend.

Toi ake

Toi Ake has been tailored by iwi and arts practitioners to focus on development and retention of ngā toi Māori, both traditional and contemporary. One of the integral strands in this initiative is for the iwi, hapū, whānau and whakapapa-based roopu to develop an arts strategy based on their strengths and weaknesses.

Te Waka Toi Awards

Te Waka Toi offers four special awards that recognise leadership, outstanding contribution and excellence in Māori arts.

You cannot apply for Te Tohu a Te Atairangikaahu  a Te Waka Toi, Ngā Tohu a Tā Kingi Ihaka, Te Tohu Toi Kē a Te Waka Toi or Te Tohu aroha mō Ngoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi. Nominations and selections for these annual awards are made by members of Te Waka Toi.

 

Te Tohu mo Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu | Te Waka Toi Exemplary Award

Te Waka Toi makes an annual award to a Māori artist in recognition of his or her exemplary contribution to the development of ngā toi Māori. This award is not open to applications.

 

Ngā Tohu a Tā Kingi Ihaka | Sir Kingi Ihaka Awards

Te Waka Toi makes annual awards to kaumātua in recognition of their contribution to strengthening the continuity of Māori culture through their support of ngā toi Māori. These awards are not open to applications.

 

Te Tohu Toi Kē a Te Waka Toi | Te Waka Toi Award for Making a Difference

Te Waka Toi makes this annual award in recognition of an individual who is making a significant, positive difference to the development and retention of Māori arts and culture through his/her chosen artform. This award is not open to applications.

 

Te Tohu aroha mō Ngoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi: “Whakarongo, Titiro, Kōrero” | Ngoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi Award

Te Waka Toi makes this annual award in honour of the late Ngoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi. This award recognises leadership and outstanding contribution to the promotion and strengthening of Te Reo Rangatira. This award is not open to applications.

Ngā Karahipi a Te Waka Toi | Te Waka Toi Scholarships

Te Waka Toi offers three scholarships to post-secondary Māori students of Māori arts across artforms and in arts-related areas (e.g. curation, arts writing, conservation), who are involved in a course of learning at a formal or informal place of learning. All applications must be accompanied by quality examples of applicants’ works. These scholarships are open to applications.

Toi Sgwigwialtxw Residency, North America

The residency is for an artist who has demonstrated excellence in his/her chosen artform. As well as having the opportunity to undertake a project of his/her choosing, the artist-in-residence will work with emerging and established Native American artists through the Longhouse’s artist-in-residence programme at The Evergreen State College, located in Olympia, Washington, North America. The artist-in-residence will also have the opportunity to participate in on-campus activities such as lectures, presentations and performances. The artist-in-residence will be hosted and supported by the staff of the Longhouse Education and Cultural Centre.

Tohunga Tukunga Mentoring Programme

Te Waka Toi has established a Tohunga Tukunga Mentoring Programme. This programme will provide Tohunga with an opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with senior Māori artists. This programme was established in response to calls from the Māori arts community for Te Waka Toi to actively assist in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge and skills for future generations of Māori artists. The programme will support Tohunga to pass on their knowledge and skills to senior Māori artists. They will not only receive personal benefit from the partnership but will also pass it on to future generations of Māori artists.

 

This programme is not intended to support standard teacher/student relationships. It is a programme intended to support exceptional Tohunga/Tukunga partnerships and is targeted at a PhD level, or equivalent. It is available to Māori artists who have attained and demonstrated a high level of creativity and excellence, possess an in-depth knowledge of their specialist artform/s, and whose abilities and skills would be enhanced by a one-to-one partnership with a Tohunga.

Creative New Zealand Toi Oahu Residency at the University of Hawaii

The Creative New Zealand Toi Oahu Residency at the University of Hawaii is a two month residency that is open to established Māori artists in the fields of visual arts and craft/ object art. The purpose of the residency is to create an opportunity for artists to create a new body of work while sharing their skills and experience with the students and teachers at the Kamakakūokalani Centre for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii.

 

The chosen artist will leave mid-September 2009 and will spend two months idea sharing, researching and creating new work.

Minimise Music

Applications for the following two scholarships should be made to the 5 March 2010 Arts Grant round. To be eligible you should be a New Zealand citizen aged 20 years or older and have completed as a minimum requirement a university degree, diploma and/or LTCL or LRSM qualification related to your proposed musical studies.


If you are applying for either of these scholarships you should follow the standard application process detailed in the Funding Guide. Please note which scholarship you wish to be considered for on the application form.

Jack McGill Music Scholarship

Interest from a bequest made in 1985 from the estate of Jack Wynnegate McGill contributes to this award which is for musical studies or investigations into music in an international setting. Outstanding young musical practitioners wishing to further their advanced music studies overseas are invited to apply for this scholarship. While this award is open to all instrumentalists and singers, pianists will be given special priority.


Up to $15,000 is available annually and funds are jointly contributed by the Jack McGill Estate supported by the Public Trust and Creative New Zealand.

Butland/Creative New Zealand Music Scholarship

The Butland Music Foundation was established in 1994 with interest from a bequest by Jack Malfroy Butland to award annual scholarships to provide talented young musicians opportunities to further their performance studies overseas. Up to $15,000 is available annually and funds are jointly contributed by the Butland Music Foundation and Creative New Zealand.

Edwin Carr Foundation Scholarship

The Edwin Carr Foundation was set up in 2004 with the purpose of making funds accrued in interest from the estate of the late Edwin Carr available as scholarships to New Zealand composers wishing to further their studies overseas. The fund which is administered by Creative New Zealand has an amount available annually of $25,000 for supporting one or two scholarships for up to a year in duration. The opportunities are available to composers that meet Creative New Zealand’s general eligibility criteria.

 

Composers should apply to the 5 March 2010 Arts Grant round for this scholarship using the application process and forms detailed in the Funding Guide.

Arts Pasifika Awards

This award recognises the contribution and role of a senior Pasifika artist in maintaining or developing his or her artform in New Zealand.

Iosefa Enari Memorial Award

This is a study or travel award supporting the development of Pasifika opera singers.

Pacific contemporary arts award

This award recognises an artist or group who has demonstrated innovation within their art form.

Emerging Pasifika Artist’s Award

This award recognises an emerging Pasifika artist or group showing promise in their chosen artform.

Pacific Heritage Arts Award

This award recognises a Pasifika artist or group who has made a significant contribution to the maintenance, revival and promotion of a Pacific heritage artform in New Zealand.

Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Committee and the National University of Samoa Artist in Residence

This three month residency at the National University of Samoa in Apia, Samoa was established by the Pacific Arts Committee of the Arts Board, Creative New Zealand. It provides a unique opportunity for artists of Pasifika heritage resident in New Zealand. This residency is offered on a rotational artform basis. The artform for 2009 is contemporary performing arts.

Minimise Visual Arts

Creative New Zealand Berlin Visual Artists’ Residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin 2010/11

This biennial residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien is for a period of 12 months and is open to all New Zealand visual artists currently working or exhibiting in New Zealand. A stipend of $40,000 is offered, to be used towards living and material costs, plus travel. A flat in Berlin is provided, and Creative New Zealand covers studio expenses and contributes towards exhibition expenses.

International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York, USA

This biennial, four-month residency is based at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. All New Zealand visual artists currently working or exhibiting in New Zealand are eligible to apply.
