Creative New Zealand

Funding | Arts Board | New media, film/moving image and web-based projects

In general, Creative New Zealand does not treat new media, moving image and web-based genres as separate artforms. The exception to this is the Screen Innovation Production Fund, a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission, which funds innovative and experimental moving-image projects.

In this section, we provide additional information on how we define these genres, at the same time acknowledging that all of the artforms covered in this guide regularly incorporate new media, moving image and web-based genres.

Please note: your application should still be directed to the particular artform that the project most relates to.

New media

The term "new media" describes a variety of artistic practices that use analogue or digital technology within an electronic and/or internet domain. New media projects use new technologies as a tool to explore new modes of artistic expression. These technologies include computers, information and communications technology, virtual or immersive environments or sound engineering to create works of art.

Types of new media arts projects include:

  • developing a computer programme to make an artwork on the internet
  • working in modes that are not necessarily in a physical space (e.g. an online exhibition)
  • internet-driven collaborative projects
  • time-based art projects.

Film and moving image

If you are seeking support for production or post-production for film and moving-image projects, go to Screen Innovation Production Fund.

FILM FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Film-based organisations seeking support for an aspect of the presentation of an established film fesitval or recurrent film event must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • a track record of at least two previous successful presentations
a funding contribution from another film-based organisation (you can't apply to the Arts Board for more funding than what's being provided by a film-based organisation/s)
distribution outcomes for Screen Innovation Production Fund projects
benefits to the New Zealand film industry and/or audience.

The following film and moving-image activities are not eligible for project funding through the Arts Board:

  • script development
projects to be assessed as part of the course work for tertiary study
    commercial moving-image projects.

Please note: applications seeking funding for a film festival or event will be assessed by the Visual Arts Assessment Committee.

Web-based projects

For projects involving websites, the Arts Board will support only those costs that are linked to specific arts projects with a clear start and completion date.

Examples of web-based arts projects that the Arts Board supports include:

  • international research about new media science-arts collaborations
  • internet-driven collaborative performance events
  • publishing an online anthology of poems.

The following activities are not eligible for funding:

  • ongoing administration and maintenance costs for a website
  • set-up costs for websites that are commercially driven.

If your project is web-based, you should apply under the artform that the project relates to. Click on a link to the left to go to your artform page.

Screen Innovation Production Fund

The Screen Innovation Production Fund is a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission. Its purpose is to provide grants to emerging and experienced moving-image makers for innovative, experimental and non-commercial moving-image productions.

The Screen Innovation Production Fund has its own set of guidelines and budget information and website, www.screeninnovation.govt.nz.

Your application must include two completed copies of the standard Creative New Zealand project funding application form (PDF, 78KB).

Please note: you don't need a copy of Creative New Zealand's Application Workbook supplement because it is not relevant to Screen Innovation Production Fund projects. However, it does have two copies of the standard application form.

The project funding environment is extremely competitive. In the 2006 calendar year, the Screen Innovation Production Fund received 247 applications and was able to fund 39 (16%) of them. Grants ranged from $890 to $25,000.

  1. Are you eligible? - please work your way through our eligibility checklist
  2. Is the Arts Board the best funding body for you to apply to? - please read about our funding bodies
  3. Do you know the closing date for project funding applications?
25 July 2008 (for projects beginning after 25 October 2008)

Types of activities we can't fund

If you haven't already checked whether your project is eligible for funding, please work your way through Step 1: Can I apply? In addition, please note that funding is not available for script or project development, music videos and educational videos.

Assessment criteria

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • the potential to support the emergence of new creative talent in the moving-image arts in New Zealand
  • the potential to develop the moving-image arts by supporting artform and media innovation
